Product details

The building from which this design originated was built in the mid-19th century on the site of the infamous Marshalsea prison, which for 500 years was known as the place where London's debtors were imprisoned, including Charles Dickens' father in 1824. Of four layers of wallpaper stuck together, this is the oldest that was found. The Gothic grid pattern with Moorish influences was the first wallpaper that adorned the walls of one of the buildings, which were built in the late 1870s, to replace the prison.
